I do use Shout (name brand) as a spot cleaner - has always worked the best for me & have soaked REALLY dirty clothes in some extra Oxiclean (name or off brand seem about the same) when necessary.
I prefer Clorox bleach but found not too long ago that the Harris Teeter store brand of concentrated bleach works well too.
I have also been using this with out HE front loading washer with no problems (Thank You Lord) but you may want to check with your manufacturer.
This has also worked for us with sensitive skin - not sure if it works for everyone.
A large bucket from Home Depot seems to be the easiest to mix everything together in - don't forget to grab a lid & you can store it in there as well. Pour everything in & mix slowly - quite a bit of 'dust' will be kicked up.
I have found everything at Wal-Mart every time I have needed it (in the laundry/cleaning section)...other places have been hit or miss.
Here's what you need:
1 (4lb 5 oz) box of Borax
1 (3lb 7oz) box of Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda - to make your own washing soda click here
3 lbs of Oxyclean or similar
2 (14oz-16oz) bars of washing soap - Zote soap, Fels Naptha or 1 of each
4 lbs of baking soda (I usually by the large bag at BJ's or Sam's)
Grate the soap on a hand grater - I do not recommend using a food processor or blender.
Mix everything together in a bucket. Store in a container with a lid.
Use 1-2 Tablespoons per load.
